Faculty Research and Scholarship Grants

On behalf of the Office of Academic Affairs, the Office of Sponsored Programs is responsible for administering SPU’s internal faculty research grants program.

When funds are available, Faculty Research and Scholarship Grants (FRSGs) are awarded by the Office of Academic Affairs to support faculty work in the three key areas of scholarship, teaching, and service as defined in the Faculty Handbook (FH 6.3 – 6.5). These grants are reviewed and ranked by the Faculty Development committee, approved by the CAO, and administered by the Office of Sponsored Programs.

Deadline: This program is currently suspended.

Who can apply? All full-time regular faculty (FH 1.2) are eligible to apply. Faculty may only apply for one FRSG each year.

What types of projects are eligible? Faculty will choose a project type focused on scholarship, teaching, or service. These options were intentionally chosen to support the three areas of faculty responsibility noted in the Faculty Handbook. Developing projects that are an appropriate fit for the selected area is left to the discretion of the faculty member. Appropriate justification of your selection will be considered in the review process.

What can be included in the budget? Your budget may include academic year release time, summer stipends, student wages, supplies and materials, some types of travel, subscriptions, software, contractor fees, and publication costs. Your budget must include tax charges, shipping charges and appropriate charges for benefits. Funds will be available to successful candidates starting July 1st, and all work must be completed by June 30th of the following year. See below for more details.

How do I apply? Submit a single PDF formatted electronic copy of the completed application and budget with appropriate signatures to the Office of Sponsored Programs (osp@spu.edu) by 5pm on the second Monday in February. Your proposal must be prepared using 12-point font with one-inch margins and must not exceed the limits specified in each section.

Reporting. A two-page summary report using the provided template must be submitted by August 1st of the year the grant is concluded.

Questions? Please contact osp@spu.edu with any questions prior to your submission or if you would like to discuss anything related to your budget or proposal – we are here to help!
