                      | Alumni Couple Travels the Open
Roads of North America in a Motor Home Retiring after 30 years teaching elementary school
                          students, JACOB “JACK” GROSS ’61
and his wife, ANNETTE UNGER GROSS ’57,
loaded up their 1985 Southwind 27-foot Class A motor
home. “When you’re a teacher, you want to
go see the things you’ve been teaching about,”
he explains. Logging 85,000 miles between 1991 and 1999, Jack and
Annette started their adventures from their home base
in Edmonds, Washington. During several long trips, the
couple reconnected with friends and family, and visited
sites throughout the continent. Ping-ponging across
the United States and Canada, they made stops in Montréal,
Ontario; Miami, Florida; Fairbanks, Alaska; New Orleans,
                          Louisiana; and elsewhere.
“In 1999, we went all the way to Cancun by motor
home,” says Jack, adding that in Alaska, they
visited Mt. McKinley. Still a teacher at heart, he didn’t miss important
historical locations he’d once taught students
about in the Edmond School District. In Boston,
the couple visited the famous Old North Church, now
dwarfed by nearby modern buildings. They visited
President Eisenhower’s burial site in Kansas,
                          and President Lincoln’s
burial site in Illinois. “We stopped at Quincy,
Massachusetts, to visit the homes of our second president,
John Adams, and the sixth president, John Quincy Adams,”
he says. “And we went down with 45 other rigs
to Mardi Gras. I think that was as memorable as anything.” Yet the Grosses’ next trip will be close to home,
says Jack: “We’re going to come to our class
reunion for sure!” | DONALD HOFFMAN retired in 2003 after 42

’59, live in Wenatchee and have two married
daughters and five grandchildren. They participate in Bible
Study Fellowship, care for their grandchildren, and enjoy

Reservation in Arizona, and 24 years providing mental-health
services on Ute Mountain, Ute Reservation in Colorado. She
is now taking time to travel, enjoy her home, and “be
a grandma.” Her husband, GERALD ROBINSON ’63,
died in 1985. Wilma lives in Dolores, Colorado. BOB ROCHELLE is a land investor and supporter

Globetrotting Alumnus Lives a Life of Song When KEITH MONTGOMERY ’81 joined
the faculty of Cairo American College in Egypt in 1988,
he assumed he’d stay about two years. “I
ended up staying for 13 wonderful years!” he says.
“The travel and the international lifestyle sank
into my pores and made it difficult to return to the
United States.” With bachelor’s and master’s degrees in
music education — and a travel bug — Keith
                          traded Egypt for England
in 2001. He began teaching choral music and chairing
the Department of Performing Arts at The American School
in London, a multicultural private school. “My
teaching load involves five choral music classes of
varying ages and ability levels,” he says, adding
that London also offered him more opportunities to perform. When an opening arose, Keith, a bass, joined the London
Symphony Chorus, which accompanies the London
Symphony Orchestra when its repertoire requires voices.
“One of the biggest thrills of my life as a musician
was the opportunity to sing Bernstein’s ‘Mass’
last spring,” he says. “It is rarely performed,
as the requirements are huge, and the chorus parts are
wickedly difficult.” Keith says two ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ music faculty
members shaped him dramatically: former Dean of the
School of Fine and Performing Arts and piano instructor
Marcille Mack, and Professor of Music Education Carol
Scott. “Any successes I have enjoyed can be attributed
to those two great ladies,” he says. And he and
David Anderson, director of SPU’s Concert Choir,
sang together in choirs while students at Spokane Falls
Community College. Keith sends “hellos” to the Class of 1981
and his former Hill Hall floormates,
                          and says, “Sorry I haven’t visited; I’ve
been out of town!” | RICH MOREY is a psychologist in Atascadero,

Degree to Work With Children of Prisoners KATIE HAGSTROM ’01 lives in
a New York county with a dubious distinction: It’s
ranked 11th in the nation for childhood poverty. The
county also includes 7,000–13,000 children with
a parent in prison. The neighborhoods are tough, and
youth-on-youth violence is common. “But we’re
going into those neighborhoods, and I love it!”
says Katie. While earning a master’s degree from Roberts
Wesleyan College in 2003, Katie interned at Bethel Christian
Fellowship, a large multicultural church. When the church
received a grant to implement Project COPE (Children
of Prisoners Embraced), she was hired as the program’s
full-time social worker for the program. The daughter of counselors, Katie laughs now to remember
that as a child she vowed not to follow in her parents’
career footsteps. But at Seattle Pacific, her classes
with Assistant Professor of Social Work JoEllen Watson,
                          and a campus
                          visit from the group Evangelicals
For Social Action, convinced Katie to put her sociology
degree into action. Watson suggested Katie enter the
master’s degree program in social work at Roberts
Wesleyan. She did, and moved to Rochester, New York. Today, Katie remains in Rochester coordinating Project
COPE. Unable to return for her SPU class reunion because
                          of the distance, she’s regularly
visiting families who have a parent in prison. Her plan
is to enroll 100 kids in the program. “We’re
up to 64, and I enrolled six kids tonight!” she
says. Once children sign up, they meet regularly with a mentor
                          for fun and support.
Together, they play sports, do crafts, explore the city,
or participate in projects such as flower-planting.
High school kids have also been taken on college visits.
“There’s something special about this program,”
says Katie. | HEATHER HILL resides in Dover, Delaware.
