  In Memoriam
   CATHERINE MCCANDLESS ’90 died
                    September 28, 2005. She was 40 years old. Born in Virginia, 
                    Catherine grew up in Kailua, Hawaii, and moved to Seattle 
                    to attend SPU, earning a degree in special education. She 
                    went on to earn a master’s degree in education
                    from Leslie College. Catherine married Tracey Stephenson in 
                    1990, and she taught special education for more than 10 years 
                    at Cedar Valley Elementary School in Kent, Washington.
                    She also enjoyed tutoring students
                    one-to-one. Catherine is survived by her husband, a sister,
                    and two nieces.
                   RUTH PUTNAM BOYD SCHOENHALS ’32 died 
                    July 14, 2005, after a long illness.
                    She was 95 years old. Born
                    in Glenwood, Washington, Ruth
                    married MYRON BOYD ’32, who pastored
                    Free Methodist churches in Washington and British Columbia. 
                    Before his death in 1978, he was
                    a bishop in the Free Methodist Church serving in Winona Lake,
                    Indiana. In 1980, Ruth married
                    LAWRENCE SCHOENHALS and in 1982, at the age 
                    of 72, she graduated from Greenville College with a degree 
                    in art. A proficient musician, she was
                    an active supporter of Seattle Pacific. She had a series of 
                    charitable gift annuities, both as a way to provide herself 
                    with income and as a way to support SPU. The Lawrence and
                    Ruth Schoenhals Christian Lectureship
                    Fine and Performing Arts Endowment
                    still brings renowned musicians to campus to perform and teach 
                    each year. Ruth is survived by her husband, Lawrence; a sister; 
                    two sons, including
                    DAROLD BOYD ’62; a daughter; stepson 
                    ROGER SCHOENHALS ’61 and stepdaughter 
                    STEPHANIE SCHOENHALS RADCLIFFE ’59; 
                    nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
                    JOHN SPENCE ’76, died May 27, 2005, 
                    after battling ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease. 
                    He is survived by his wife, PETRA ANDERSON SPENCE 
                    ’76, and three daughters.
                    DENNIS VANLANDINGHAM ’88 died August 
                    5, 2005, after a two-year struggle with bipolar disorder. 
                    He
                    was 39 years old. Dennis had a
                    passion for technology and began working for SPU as a student 
                    worker in Computer and Information Systems.
                    He continued after graduation and was an SPU senior systems 
                    analyst
                    for more than 10 years. He then began working for Microsoft, 
                    where
                    he stayed for seven years. Dennis is survived by his wife, 
                    ROBIN REDDING VANLANDINGHAM ’87, a 
                    son, and two daughters.
