What is something you wish everyone knew about your major? Ecology is extremely interdisciplinary which means there is something in it for everyone! Whether you’re interested in macrofauna or microbiology, classes like forest ecology and chemical ecology taught me just how interconnected all these processes are. This program gave me the freedom to focus on the fields of study I found most intriguing while giving me a well-rounded education in biology. SPU’s ecology program places a high value on research and experiential learning which is facilitated by incredibly capable and qualified professors.

What was your most impactful class or professor? Evolutionary mechanisms with Dr. Wall-Scheffler was certainly the most impactful class I took at SPU. It was a fast-paced course with a steep learning curve, but I surprised myself through my final project which made me realize just how capable I was. Additionally, the research experience gained through working with Dr. Wall-Scheffler further helped me see my potential as a researcher. The course's content, and the manner in which it was taught, truly strengthened my faith and helped reconcile my beliefs regarding faith and science.

What are you excited for in your future career? I look forward to traveling the world, traipsing through jungles, and going on many more wonderful adventures! “It's a dangerous business, [...] going out your door. You step onto the road, and if you don’t keep your feet, there’s no knowing where you might be swept off to.” ~ J.R.R. Tolkien, The Lord of the Rings

What advice do you have for incoming students? Put yourself out there, try new things, and don’t forget that your professors are an invaluable resource! They have so much knowledge and wisdom to offer.

How have you grown during your time at SPU? During my time at SPU I’ve seen myself grow in many ways! Understanding how my faith intersects with science has been a major theme throughout my college education. Courses on neuroscience, vertebrate biology, evolutionary mechanisms, and theological ecology all discussed how these scientific truths can be understood through different faith lenses. These courses broadened my perspective on what it means to be human and to be stewards of creation. If I had to sum it up in one sentence, I’d say that SPU has expanded my worldview, deepened my empathy towards others, and supported me in my faith journey through all its twists and turns.
