General Information
Teacher-related graduate degrees requiring Residency Teacher certification as a prerequisite are housed within one department at SPU — Curriculum and Instruction. The Curriculum and Instruction master's program offers specialization in teaching and learning and reading and language arts, and an online master of education program with a specialization in teaching and learning is also available. When all degree work is done, the transcript will verify the specific program completed as follows: Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction. Specialization: Teaching and Learning.
Due to the focus of the curriculum and instruction degree on the K–12 school system, it is preferred that each applicant has completed an approved program for teacher certification prior to enrollment. Exceptions should be approved through the graduate program manager by calling 206.281.2378.
In addition to the course requirements listed below for the teaching and learning specialty, students are required to create a portfolio, publicly present a solid piece of research in their interest area, and complete a comprehensive examination. Except for the comprehensive exam, these requirements will be integrated into students' coursework as much as possible.
